The Memorial Academium is to function as a war memorial open to the public, to remind us of the past and provide us with an outlook on the future.
It is also a place for higher studies and discussion, a place where scholars and interested persons can meet and exchange ideas.
The historical court room of the Yokohama Regional Court was dismantled and reconstructed inside the Academium.
After World War II, war criminals were tried through a jury system in this court room, a system which is no longer in use in Japan.
The Academium also houses a collection of materials and data files concerning the World War II Era. Of course, mock trials by law students are also scheduled to be held in this court room.
In addition, the Academium's library will hold a selection of original works of German jurist and legal historian Savigny, a founder of the historical school of jurisprudence in the 19th century. We are planning a digital archieve that will make his work accessible to the people throughout the world.
